Exactly How to Give Yourself a Bombshell Blowout (Even if You Don't Have Skills)
Yes, you can seriously make your hair look like this.
1. Smooth wet hair with a wide-tooth comb and work mousse through from roots to ends. Use a volumizing formula, such as RUSK Styling Collection Mousse, and a lot more than you think you need. It's not the standard golf ball size, but more like two jumbo eggs.
2. Rough-dry your hair. Start by flipping your head upside down to amp up the volume. Aim a dryer all around your hair, not just the front sections. The Infiniti Pro by Conair 3Q dries hair fast and doesn't get too hot, so you won't damage your hair, says Rozenberg. "Plus, the narrow nozzle helps position the airflow exactly where you want it," he says. Run your fingers through hair as you dry it. Once it's a little less than half dry, flip it back up and dry the sides and the crown for about two minutes.
3. Dry your hair and curl it in sections. Now that your hair is more than half dry, run three-inch sections around a round brush like Conair Mega Ceramic Medium Vented Round Boar Brush. "The boar bristles help smooth strands while giving them volume," says Rozenberg. Curl the hair away from your face using the brush and light tension, blow-drying as you go. Once it's smooth and dry, roll each section up and away from your face in a Velcro roller to cool.
4. Shoot your hair with a cool blast of air. After each section is up in a roller, switch to a diffuser attachment on your dryer, which enhances curls, and give your hair a shot of cold air. "Unlike other dryers this one has a cool shot switch so you don't have to hold it down with your finger (translation: no cramps!)," says Rozenberg. It might be tempting to skip this step, but don't. "Setting the curls with cool air is what amplifies them and keeps your hair from falling flat after a few hours," he says.
5. Unroll curlers and muss it up a bit. Once the rollers have all been unraveled, gently shake out each section of hair at the root. Picture the motion you use when you wash your hair — it's just like that, with your fingertips massaging your scalp — then rake your hair through with your fingers. Spritz a texturizing spray like Rusk Texture Dry Finishing Spray Medium Hold (at an arm's length) from the chin down to the ends to give it a piece-y, more lived in look.
